Equipment

  • 1 Cast iron skillet

Ingredients

  • 4 lbs. Granny Smith medium-sized apples peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts
  • 1 egg white whisked
  • 2 tablespoons sugar for sprinkling on crust

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • In your oven-safe skillet (cast iron works best), melt the butter over medium heat, then add the brown sugar and cook, stirring occasionally until dissolved, about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • In a large bowl, combine the peeled and sliced apples, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Toss the mixture until all the apples are evenly coated.
  • Place 1 pie crust in the skillet over brown sugar mixture then spoon all of the apples over the crust, being sure to drain any excess liquid.
  • Place remaining pie crust over the apple pie mixture and tuck in the sides of the crust around the skillet.
  • Whisk egg whites until foamy then brush over pie crust and sprinkle all over with sugar.
  • Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Once baked, remove the skillet from the oven and let it cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing. Serve, either on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
