Steak and Gruyere Cheese Steak Sandwich
Ingredients
1lb. Shaved Rib Eye Steak (from a high-quality local butcher shop)
1 block Gruyere cheese, grated
2 French baguettes or sandwich rolls
1 large red onion, thinly sliced and caramelized (see below for instructions)
2 tablespoons Truffle Mayonnaise (I used Truff)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: Arugula or baby spinach for added freshness
Instructions
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
Add the thinly sliced red onions to the skillet and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and golden brown. This process may take around 15-20 minutes. Be patient, as slow caramelization brings out the natural sweetness of the onions. Season with a pinch of salt and set aside.
In a separate skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat.
Add the shaved rib eye steak to the skillet and season with salt and pepper to taste.
Cook the steak for about 2-3 minutes per side or until it's cooked to your desired level of doneness. Avoid overcrowding the skillet to ensure the steak cooks evenly.
Turn off heat and add the Gruyere to the pan with the steak, mixing well to combine.
Slice the French baguettes or sandwich rolls in half lengthwise and spread the truffle mayonnaise generously on both sides of the baguettes or rolls.
On the bottom half of each baguette or roll, evenly distribute the arugula or spinach if using. Place the cooked rib eye steak on top, then evenly distribute the caramelized onions on top of the steak.
Cut each sandwich in half and serve warm. Enjoy!
